What is confined space?

OSHA defines a confined space as one that has limited or restricted means of entry or exit, is large enough for employees to enter and perform their work and is not designed for continuous occupancy (29 CFR 1910.146 (b)).

confinedspacesign1A permit-required confined space is a space that has one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Contains or could contain a hazardous atmosphere
  • Contains material that has the potential for engulfing the entrant
  • Inwardly converging walls or floors that slope downward and taper into a smaller area which could trap or asphyxiate an entrant
  • Any other recognized safety or health hazards such as unguarded machinery, exposed live wires, or heat stress
